My name is Laura Winton and I am a Co-opted Governor and currently hold the post of Chair of Governors.

Clipstone Brook is a thriving school that offers your child an excellent start in their educational journey. I chose Clipstone for my own children and it has always felt like the right choice. When I first visited the school, and whenever I now visit as a Governor, I see a school that knows its pupils well and cares about their wellbeing and education.

Whilst good academic standards and our Ofsted report are just one piece of the overall picture of our school, we were very pleased that at our latest Ofsted inspection in November 2019 it was noted that:

‘Clipstone Brook Lower is an inclusive school where everyone is welcome and valued.’

This observation is a credit to our dedicated and hard-working staff, throughout the school, who are committed to ensuring each and every pupil is given the opportunity to fulfil their potential.

Our Early Years learning provides the essential foundation as your child begins their educational journey and we believe there is no better start than at our School.

As Governors our role, as defined by the Department of Education, is to:

  • Ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction for the school
  • Hold executive leader to account for the educational performance of the school and it’s pupils
  • Oversee the financial performance of the school and make sure that money is well spent

Whilst this definition seems quite formal, it is often described as being a ‘critical friend’ to the school who is there to both support and challenge. As Governors at Clipstone Brook, we want to ensure the wellbeing of all the children and enable them to achieve to the best of their ability, and we work with the school to achieve this.

We meet as a Full Governing Body twice each term. One of these meetings focuses on our School Development Plan (SDP) to support the school in making continuous improvements for the benefit of all the children. We also have a Finance Committee that meets twice a year to report back to the Full Governing Body on the budget and other Financial issues.

Our Governing Body is made up of Co-opted, Parent, Staff and Local Authority Governors. Parents Governors are parents with a child at the school, and when a vacancy arises this is advertised in the school newsletter so an election can be arranged. Co-opted Governors are usually recruited based on the skills that they can bring to the Governing Body and we are currently looking for Co-opted Governors with experience of Primary Education or general Governance experience.

If you are interested in becoming a Governor, please contact the school office who can give you information and put you in touch with me for an informal chat about the role.

We often attend school events to support pupils and staff, and if you need to contact us for any reason then this can be done through the school office.
