At Clipstone Brook Lower we use the White Rose Maths scheme to support our mastery approach to maths. Teaching maths for mastery helps develop a deep, long term and adaptable understanding of maths. When teaching maths for mastery, the whole class moves through topics at broadly the same pace. Each topic is studied in depth and the pace is slower to ensure children have really understood concepts, rather than just having to follow a set of rules. This means that topics do not need to be revisited as often because they already have a depth of understanding.
White Rose Maths is a carefully sequenced programme that allows children to work step by step through new concepts in a practical (using concrete apparatus) before using and applying these skills in reasoning and problem solving activities.
These Long Term Plans show the areas of maths that your child/ren will be covering and at what approximate time of year. This year the scheme has been updated to ensure that any areas of learning that children may have missed out on due to the Covid 19 crisis are taught before the current year group step is taught.
These overviews show what is taught across the year and when.
Year 1 and Year 2 Overview
Year 3 and Year 4 Overview
Newly updated this year, the White Rose maths reception guidance fully supports the ethos of Early Years. Children are encouraged to explore maths through engaging environments whilst at the same time enabling teachers to create a mathematically rich curriculum. The updated reception scheme underpins the new Educational Programme for Mathematics (DFE July 2020) and embeds mathematical thinking and talk. There are opportunities to revisit aspects of number throughout the year and opportunities to develop the understanding of shape, measure and spatial thinking.
Here is the overview for the whole year for reception children:
In addition to the white rose scheme of learning as a school we are focusing on fluency and being able to recall key facts to support understanding and application in problems. To support with this we use Key Instant Recall Facts, Rolling numbers, TTRockstars and Numbots. To find out more about these, please click on the relevant links.
